Ashley Lindsley-Kim

Philosophy PhD Student at University of British Columbia

Hello and welcome!

I'm currently a Ph.D. student in Philosophy at University of British Columbia, where I primarily do work in feminist philosophy. Most recently, I've been working on some papers with Christie Hartley on the ethics and politics of abortion, and doing research into the nature of our sexual duties towards intimate partners.

Research Interests

My research interests are in feminist philosophy, social & political philosophy, and ethics.

In a forthcoming article with Christie Hartley, we argue that the principle that all dependents are owed care does not support the claim that a pregnant person can be morally obligated to gestate an unwanted fetus. To make this argument we focus on the nature of pregnancy: how to understand it, how it differs from caregiving, how it is inherently risky, how fetal development is by its nature invasive, and why all this matters for the ethics and politics of abortion.

We are currently working on more papers on abortion, while my other research interests are in sexual ethics. I am particularly interested in what kinds of duties and responsibilities we have towards our sexual partners, and if or when sexual exclusion is a matter of justice.

About Me

If you're in this section, you've probably already read a bit about me! I'm a current Ph.D. student in Philosophy at University of British Columbia, and I focus in feminist philosophy, social & political philosophy, and ethics. My research has most recently focused on the ethics and politics of abortion, and I'm currently interested in sexual ethics.

I received my B.A. from University of California, San Diego in 2019, and my M.A. from Georgia State University in 2023. Before beginning my doctoral studies, I was a visiting instructor at GSU, where I taught Introduction to Ethics for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Outside of philosophy, I spend my free time (semi-obsessively!) knitting, reading/watching science fiction, and baking sweets to pawn off on friends.
